The Vatican confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday, October 13, saying that doctors had discovered a localised nodule in his lung during routine medical examinations.

Pope Leo XIV had surgery Tuesday at Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic in northwest Rome to remove a nodule that was determined to be pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer.

The first night that Pope Leo XIV spent in the hospital following surgery was calm, the Holy See Press Office reported.
